Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
BPH or enlargement of the prostate gland is a fairly common condition in which the prostate enlarges and can block the urinary channel. Growth of the prostate is normal throughout a man’s life. As the prostate grows in the area around the urethra, its growth can restrict the flow of urine from the bladder out of the body causing uncomfortable urinary symptoms.
The common symptoms of BPH are:
- Frequent urination
- Weak stream
- Increase frequency of urination
- Sensation of incomplete bladder emptying
- Urgent feeling of urination
- Urinary dribbling
- Inability to urinate
What are some of the treatment options for BPH?
- Oral medications such as tamsulosin (Flomax) or alfuzosin (Uroxatral) to open the urinary channel in the center of the prostate.
- Minimally invasive procedures to physically remove or relieve the obstruction. Some of the options here include Urolift, resection of the prostate (TURP), Greenlight laser photovaporization of the prosate.
