Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie’s Disease (PD) typically manifests as a bend or curve of the penis. Most men have a mild curve to the penis but this curve is not a barrier to intimacy. With curve due to peyronie’s disease, men may also have difficulty with erection quality or difficulty with penetrative intimacy. PD can also appear as a lump in the penis or as a painful erection. Peyronie’s disease can cause shortening of the penile length.
The penis contains two tubes called the corpus cavernosum. These spongy tubes fill with blood and give rise to an erection. Each corpus cavernosum is surrounded by a covering of elastic tissue called the tunica albuginea. In Peyronie’s Disease, the tunica albuginea develops scar tissue that cannot stretch and when the corpora fill with blood during an erection, the penis bends.
Peyronie’s Disease is relatively common. Approximately 1 in 11 men suffer from some form of Peyronie’s. Men who have a history of trauma to the penis, low testosterone, diabetes or have history of Dupuytren’s contracture of the hand are at higher risk of developing Peyronie’s Disease.
In order to determine the next steps for treatment of the PD, Dr. Hodgins will perform a history and physical exam. It is helpful if you can bring in photographs your erect penis (taken at home), with views from above and both sides. These photos will be helpful in determining the degree of curvature and help determine your best treatment option.
There are a number of treatment options for Peyronie’s Disease, depending on each patient’s unique situation. The most common treatment options include:
- A series of in-office penile injections with Xiaflex which is designed to slowly break down the plaque
- Penile traction therapy with Restorex device
- Surgery
- Penile Implant
